Vera
Petroleum Sales Coordinator (Calgary)

Where did you go to School? What program did you attend?
After I came to Canada at the age of thirteen, I attended St. James Elementary school and Holy Cross High School and continued on to study at the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan, all in the beautiful city of Saskatoon. I knew my passion was in business and with a creative edge, I knew I had to go for a business school, studying Marketing. I convocated in the spring of 2008.

What was the most challenging aspect of your first position?
In my first job with FCL, being the only female in our region’s petroleum department, coupled with my age and ethnicity, was challenging. I find that it is key to build a trustworthy relationship and it can be done as long as I have confidence in what I do.

What is the most rewarding part of your career?

After I solve a problem, the gratitude from the end beneficiary is always very rewarding. I also am grateful for having a great team to work with in the office.

What do you think it takes to be successful in this career?
I believe it takes a dedicated, honest, and organized person with solid career goals. Just like any other career, I found the job gets easier when I welcome challenges, accept criticisms, and just have fun.

What advice do you have for students looking to land their first job?
Do not be afraid to phone or E-mail for information from appropriate persons. Do not limit yourself to one industry or one job type and do not ever be afraid to ask questions. I believe the only bad questions are the ones not asked.

Vera began her career with the CRS in 2008 and is currently employed in the wholesale sector at Federated Co-operatives Limited.
