Food Store Manager (Olds, Retail)

The Co-operative Retailing System (CRS) is a unique, multi-billion-dollar organization based on the fundamental principles of co-operation. We invite applications for the position of Food Store Manager based out of our retail location in Olds, Alberta.

Westview Co-op is a dynamic, growing, co-operative with budgeted sales in excess of $51 million with Food and Petroleum as primary products.  We serve the communities of Olds, Carstairs, Eagle Hill and Sundre providing employment for approximately 150 Team Members.  On February 1, 2018 we are proud to be amalgamating with Drumheller Co-op, which will increase our sales volume to over $85 million and over 200 Team Members. Operating in a diverse and highly competitive retail environment, the Food Store Manager is responsible for the leadership of the Food Operations with Westview Co-op.  This would include direct responsibility over the assigned Food Store location at Westview Co-op, in addition to supporting the food side of operations of the assigned Gas Bars.

This position is a member of our Leadership Team. This position is responsible for providing strategic direction to the Food and Gas Bar Team Leaders to ensure safe, effective operations and processes which align with the strategy, objectives and vision of the respective departments.  This individual will work with the Executive Leadership Team and Region Commodity Teams to determine current and future capabilities required for effective execution of merchandising, marketing, image/fixed assets, talent development in addition to driving sales.

This position requires a strategic focus by developing and implementing successful marketing campaigns to boost store sales and consumer awareness of the Co-op Value proposition.  This position would work closely with our Leadership Team and Marketing Teams to execute strategies while looking for new ways to enhance business growth through CRS Programs.  Identification of external competitive pressures and strategic responses would be completed as part of Retail Strategic Planning. 

The Food Manager is responsible for the overall safe, effective operations of the Food Store. This individual will work with Team Leaders to identify areas for improvement and follow up on execution.  Ensure facilities adhere to or exceed Brand Standards and expectations. Identify deficiencies and provide recommendations/action plans as required. Work closely with other departments (i.e. HR/Asset Protection/Marketing) to achieve results and meet required expectations pertaining to the operations in these areas. 

Follow up with Team Leaders & Team Members understand and adhere to Westview Co-op’s Brand Image and Best Practice for the respective departments are required on a consistent basis. This position works closely with Team Leaders to identify areas for improvement and find ways to improve operational results with a strategic focus to ensure long term sustainability of the operations.  Understanding, adherence to, and execution, as well as responsibility for Team Leaders and Team Members in the respective operation, of Westview Co-op’s Policies and Procedures is required.

This position is responsible for all aspects of the operation and financial results including sales, margins, expenses, inventory and SPEH of assigned Food and Gas Bar departments.  Review financial statements and provide coaching/guidance for Team Leaders to identify strengths and areas for improvements.  Work with respective Team Leader to develop action plans and follow up as required.  Assist in preparation of the annual Retail Strategic Plan and the annual budget.  Administrative duties including claims, invoices and all other paperwork is done timely, accurately and meets agreed upon timelines. 

Sustainability if most often defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.  There are three main pillars, economic, environmental and social.  These three pillars are informally referred to as people, planet and profits.  Aligning with these pillars our Food Store Manager would be responsible for:

People:  Involvement in community/work events and functions.  Build relationships with local suppliers/farmers to find new sustainable/ethically produced product.  Build an engaged Team with learning opportunities for Team Members to develop them professionally and personally. 

Profit:  Actively seek to grow the business, seeking out new product lines, in addition to finding ways to attract new Guests and Members to our Co-op.  Look for way to responsibly reduce costs while ensuring a safe effective operation.

Planet:  Adhere to all environmental guidelines and safety practices as set out in the day to day operation as defined by Westview Co-op, our business partners and or legislation where applicable.  Look for and implement new ways to improve the operation in reducing the environmental impact of the operation.

This position is responsible for the overall Health and Safety of all Team Members.  Leadership by example in working safely, prompt coaching of unsafe behaviors as well as recognition for Team Members doing safety right. 

The ideal candidate would have a minimum of five to ten years of progressive, successful, related retail management experience.  Post-secondary education in business or a related field would be an asset.  A valid Alberta Driver’s License is required for travel to a variety of retail locations in Central Alberta and some out of province travel.  If you demonstrate a high level of leadership, strategic planning, effective prioritization, interpersonal skills with a high level of professional/personal integrity, this may be the perfect opportunity for you!
