Haida Gwaii Co-op is a part of the Co-operative Retailing System (CRS), which is a unique, multi-billion dollar organization based on the fundamental principles of co-operation. It is comprised of a network of approximately 197 autonomous retail co-operatives across Western Canada along with their branch operations and Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL). The CRS serves our members and communities with a variety of products and services. Haida Gwaii Co-operative invites applications for the position of General Manager.

Haida Gwaii Co-op has its primary location in the town of Masset, serving thousands of members owners in 2 different communities in Northern British Columbia. Haida Gwaii Co-op is a thriving co-operative with annual sales of almost $14 million supporting our member-owners since 1945.  Our retail operates 2 Food Centres (Masset and Skidegate) and 1 Home Centre (Masset).

Reporting to an elected Board of Directors, the General Manager will interpret the strategic vision and manage the organizational strategy by directing all aspects of the business.  The successful applicant will build and foster strong relationships within the communities where Haida Gwaii Co-op operates and within the Co-operative Retailing System. This also includes our members, customers, community partners, business partners, other co-operatives, our elected board and approximately 65 employees.

Operating in a dynamic retail environment, the successful candidate will provide leadership in planning, policy development, and ensuring appropriate resources are effectively in place to support the vision, mission and values of the Co-op.  The General Manager will inspire the energy, enthusiasm, hard work and community spirit within the Haida Gwaii Co-op team. The successful incumbent will actively seek out opportunities to increase efficiencies and new methodologies to ensure Haida Gwaii Co-op continues to thrive, remain profitable and evolve to meet the needs of our membership.

The successful candidate will possess a proven successful retailing background incorporating demonstrable business acumen in marketing and operations, financial management, effective communication and a strong understanding of how to motivate and inspire a team. Leadership, strategic planning, effective prioritization and visionary skills are essential for success in this role, as are strong interpersonal skills and personal/professional integrity. The preferred candidate will have a business degree or designation and/or a combination of education and experience appropriate for the position.
