The Co-operative Retailing System (CRS) is a unique, multi-billion dollar organization based on the fundamental principles of co-operation. It is comprised of a network of approximately 170 autonomous retail co-operatives across Western Canada along with their branch operations, and Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL). FCL is the wholesaling/manufacturing arm of the CRS, which provides the retail co-ops with a range of products and services. Central Alberta Co-op invites applications for the position of Director, Human Resources.

Central Alberta Co-op is a dynamic, growing, Co-operative with budgeted sales in excess of $320 million dollars with Food, Pharmacy, Liquor, C-Store/Gas Bar, Agro, Home Centre, Cardlock and Bulk Delivered Petroleum as primary products.  Central Alberta Co-op’s Administration Office is based in Red Deer with locations in the communities of Lacombe, Innisfail, Spruce View, Stettler, Elnora, Blackfalds, Castor, Crossfield, Eckville and Red Deer providing employment for approximately 750 (and growing!) employees in the communities we serve.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Central Alberta Co-op, the Director, Human Resources will be responsible for strategically leading the Team Member experience within the Co-operative, including:

  • Actively partnering with the CEO and other organizational leaders for short and long-term planning and decision making, including the creation of HR-specific strategies
  • Leading the Human Resources team, ensuring alignment of responsibilities to support the organization’s vision and strategic direction
  • Collaborating with FCL Home Office, Region Human Resources, and other Co-op’s to lead people projects and initiatives, facilitating change that impacts the Human Resources function at the Co-op and across the CRS
  • Maintaining positive and effective Labour Relations including bargaining of collective agreement(s), participating or leading negotiations, grievance prevention and response, arbitration preparation, and leading proactive strategies
  • Developing and implementing the Human Resources’ department business plan and associated budget

The successful candidate will have demonstrated a proven connection to their community, and examples of innovative leadership to inspire others and achieve results. The role requires occasional travel across Central Alberta Co-op’s trading area in addition to other scheduled meetings with FCL Region and Home Office teams.

Additional Qualifications include:

  • An undergraduate degree in Human Resources Administration, Business, Commerce, or equivalent
  • Certified Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation is preferred, and experience will be considered
  • 10+ years of total HR experience with generalist knowledge and application, and minimum five years in a leadership role
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Broad knowledge of human resources practices, with a focus on business partner relationships, to deliver people programs effectively in a dynamic and diverse environment
  • Retail experience and a basic understanding of the business would be an asset

Preference will be given to candidates with previous or current experience in the Co-operative Retailing System.
