Assistant Food Store Manager (St. Paul, Retail)

The Co-operative Retailing System (CRS) is a unique, multi-billion dollar organization based on the fundamental principles of co-operation. It is comprised of a network of approximately 190 autonomous retail co-operatives across Western Canada along with their branch operations, and Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL). FCL is the wholesaling/manufacturing arm of the CRS, which provides the retail co-ops with a range of products and services. Cornerstone Co-op in St. Paul invites applications for the position of Assistant Food Store Manager.

Cornerstone Co-op is a leader in the CRS, serving 26,000 members from 20 different locations in 7 communities within a trading area 280 kilometers long in the north-east corner of Alberta.   

Reporting directly to the Food Store Manager at St. Paul, the focus of this position is to lead the Grocery Department and assist in leading the Pharmacy and the fresh departments to ensure that we maintain high quality standards at all times.

As a brand ambassador, you will assist in all areas of People, Financial, Market Growth, Sustainability, and Operational Excellence.  Building on a positive team environment, you will model living the brand everyday through our values of Teamwork, Commitment and Integrity and you will contribute to supporting the overall store team in providing consistent positive experiences and an outstanding “You’re at Home Here” customer service level where overall image and financial results are a focus for our members at this location.

Accountabilities also include:  productivity and sales; margins and inventories; merchandising and signage; team appearance; facilities; equipment and housekeeping; leading in safety excellence; succession planning and employee development; etc. 

All departments will report to this position in the absence of the Food Manager. 

Our St. Paul Food Store is in the final stages of completing a major renovation and has annual sales volume of $20.35 million which includes the Grocery Department volume of $11 million. 


The successful candidate must possess the ability to work as part of a highly motivated team, and possess excellent leadership, communication, organization, management and sales skills.  Preference may be given to applicants with management training and experience leading a team; or leadership experience within the Co-operative Retailing System (CRS).  Food related experience will be required.  Progression from this position to a more senior position such as Food Store Manager, or similar, after 2-3 years in this position within Cornerstone Co-operative or within the larger CRS would be an expectation of the candidate.
